A history of marriage takes us on an engaging romp through civilization's quest for a social construct which will contribute to growth while conforming to the mores of the day. Richly described examples taken from archives speak to the dedication of the author. I love historians who can paint such vivid images, don't you? It is also refreshing to se. Less historical than I had hoped for N. Perz but still useful. I am interested in the issue of how/when marriage became transformed into a legal institution controlled by the State as opposed to a purely private/religious institution. This book wasn't especially helpful on that topic but was informative generally. I would recommend simply just because there doesn't seem to be much scholarly wo. "fascinating" according to intrigued. This was a very interesting reading about the broad history of marriage from antiquity to present. Abbott covers the social norms and concepts of marriage throughout the epochs and touches on a few issues relevant to marriage.
