Carlson I recall reading Dominic before I was ten years old, and I still have the original hardcover with me, and count it among my favorite books. In Dominic, Steig created a character who endured with me my whole life as not just a well-crafted creation, but something inspiring. He's clever but not unrealistically so - prone to navel-gazing and dreaming but also a pragmatist - polite and friendly but not naive or sheepish - intelligent but not a know-it-all - brave but occasionally a little too gung-.
