This is a very good book. One which details the horror of the Reconsgt This is a very good book. One which details the horror of the Troubles. It clearly defines the stupidity of both sides. The free world should be ashamed of themselves for letting this go on for as long as it did. McGartland is not a hero, perhaps he is better defined as someone who learned how to make the "system" work for him. He did do "good" things but he certainly was no upstanding citizen. Second, this was an important work for understanding the war in Northern Ireland. Specifically, it allows the reader to see how informants were used by the British to prosecute the war against the IRA. A lot of techniques, tactics, and procedures are learned from this riveting first-person account. The reader not only learns the methodology the British used to penetrate IRA organizations, but how the IRA responded in order to maintain their operational security.
