Still, Melisandre’s lawyer is family. Is she a master manipulator or someone who was driven to temporary madness? Cold and calculating, or a mother concerned for her daughters’ well being? Someone is leaving Melisandre enigmatic, threatening notes. "SKIP this 12th book." according to Amazon Customer. This was a REAL disappointment. I have read all of Laura Lippman's books and this one really was a surprise. It's really badly written. The plot is so convoluted that after a while you simply don't give a hoot what happens. She throws in a second story line that really has nothing to do with the first one and is just filler. The characters are wooden and not deep. About half way through I actively disliked them. She even treated the regular characters poorly. Tess in this book has become a mealy mouthed uninteresting, scared mommy. OK, so she's a mom. It shouldn't have sucked her brains out of her head. This is NOT he. Just okay. I have really loved Laura Lippman's past books, especially the Tess Monaghan series. But this book and the last one have been disappointing. The "crime mystery" just didn't catch my fancy for some reason. I liked the books better when Tess was single because the books were more about her. This one was more about the characters in the mystery and I didn't really like any of them. And the parts about Tess herself were not parts I could related to.. Read all of her books (no, I'm not related)! ddmcinzh Love all of Laura Lippman's books. The writing is thoughtful and truly interesting. Not terrifying but also not a light-hearted read. I think I've read them all.
