"Fate is inexorable," Uhtred constantly bemoans as he attempts to destroy such enemies as Kjartan the Cruel, Sven the One-Eyed and Ælfric (Uhtred's thief of an uncle) and woos his beloved Gisela, Guthred's Valkyrie-like sister. From Publishers Weekly Set in A.D. 878, Cornwell's splendid third Saxon novel (after The Pale Horseman and The Last Kingdom) chronicles the adventures of 21-year-old Saxon warrior Uhtred of Bebbanburg, who believes "my swords could win me the whole world." From New York Times bestselling author Bernard Cornwell, now available in paperback—the third installment of Bernard Cornwell’s bestselling series chronicling the epic saga of the making of England, “like Game of Thrones, but real” (The Observer, London)—the basis for The Last Kingdom, the hit BBC America television series. After achieving victory at King Alfred’s side, Uhtred of Bebbanburg is returning to his home in the North, finally free of his allegiance to the King—or so he believes. "Excellent performance! The Richard Armitage performance is the best version" according to cwooden. I've listened to all of Bernard Cornwell's Saxon series in audiobook format (and read them in hardcover, too) and this is the best of them all. Richard Armitage's reading is vastly superior to the other narrators (Tom Sellwood, Jamie Glover, and Gerard Doyle). Mr. Armitage is a master storyteller. His narration does not sound like the book is being read (as it sometimes does in the other versions) -- it's being performed -- no, it's lived. The pacing is impressive -- calm and contemplative when required, intense and passionate for the action sequences. He adds just the right . Bernard Cornwell's style is gripping. Bernard Cornwell's style is gripping. His sentence style is transparent. The long sentences flow easily and move the reader along smoothly. He puts you into the scene graphically, emotionally and logically so that you live it. Just when things start to get predictable, the plot shifts in unexpected ways so that I frequently went "Oh no!" and had to keep reading to see how Utred would get out his new predicament.Everyone needs to read historical novels from authors who do good research. I was referring to his maps so often that I now know England far better than ever before (w. A time woven tale I have been on a Viking kick since the History channel show came out a few years ago. I found the "Last Kingdom" show on BBC America and liked it equally, maybe even a bit more. This book let me see what are the future possibilities for the show.As always the book offers more and varied details, with discrepancies. I spent 3 childhood years in the UK and remember learning about the Danelaw, so hence the source of my curiosity.Fascinating time period, all history is fiction, yet Cromwell is descriptive, entertaining, and fun.The three fates await.
