This was my first-ever Miss Marple book I wanted to start at the beginning. It was a fun cozy mystery, with plenty of gossip over the garden wall and lots of tea poured in quaint drawing rooms. The highly unpopular Colonel Protheroe is murdered in the Vicar's study, of all places. Along with local Inspector Slack, the Vicar is quite caught up in solving the crime. Miss Marple seems to crop up out of nowhere on various occasions, which seems a little clumsy, and her theories about the murder are nothing short of prescient. That was a little odd -- I really got no sense of her as . "Easy mental gymnastics" according to Birdie. It was easy to relax into this mystery. The main characters, in addition to Miss Marple, were quite likeable. This book is my favorite of the Miss Marple series. Once again I am reminded one cannot always believe what everyone says.
