Chanticleer Book Reviews said A Riptide of a Novel -- Powerfully Written and Finely Nuanced. Undoubtedly one of the best new books I've read, "The Prodigal" by Michael Hurley is the novel I tell everybody they must read. It is a story that you will not soon forget."The Prodigal" could be interpreted as a coming of age story, not of teenagers or young adults, but of the middle-aged. Mature adults who seem to have it all together, but grapple with insubstantiality. Adults, who as arrows of Life's bow, are missing their true target. These are the vividly drawn characters of Michael Hurley's novel.A riveting and socially relevant tale, The Prodigal is a contemporary marvel of an legorical story of vices and virtues, of Achilles. An Eloquently Written, Delightful Novel Michael Hurley has given readers a wonderful gift in his novel The Prodigal. Hurley proves himself a more than capable novelist in telling the story, continually painting the landscape of the context and developing the colorful and lively characters of The Prodigal. As I began the novel, I was impressed by the beautiful prose of Hurley but wondered where the story was leading and if it would turn out a worthwhile tale. Soon after the first several scenes I could not put The Prodigal down, and I can assure you the story and conclusion do not disappoint. One of the best elements of the story is the setting of Ocracoke Island on the Sout. There’s a sense of phrasing that leads the readers to think of ancient classics and many points in the novel that call those classics to mind. In fact, Hurley tackles a wealth of concepts in this 359-page novel with varying degrees of success. The Prod

He goes to Ocracoke Island on the Outer Banks of North Carolina to try to regain some sense of self, and meets and rescues a young woman named Molly, and forms a friendship with a priest, Marcus, who struggles with addiction. Hurley's novel weaves in many elements of law, sailing, and Roman Catholicism, and ties them together well. His interest in the ship also attracts the attention of colleagues in the Vatican, who believe the ship may hold a sacred relic. . Marcus discovers a boat, named Cygnet, and the boat's appearance leads him to believe that it may be a legendary ship called the Prodigal. While the allegories are a bit heavy-handed and characters are simplistic at times , the author's att
