Disapointed Dave said a complete history of zen and an excellent piece of reference material for anyone interested in knowing how it evolved and why. I love this book. It details the entire history of zen. Where it comes from and all its twists and turns along the way. I really enjoyed it, so much so that I purchased the hardcopy after reading the kindle edition.
With regard to the Japanese books on Zen referred to in the text, I have not given the names of the publishers. So far as I know, no book is written on Zen in English or in any other European language, except The Sermons of aB uddhist A bbot, byS hakuS o-yen. Careful attention has been made to accurately preserve the original format of each page whilst digitally enhancing the aged text. Read books online for free at forgottenbooks.
