"Not Sabatini's best--but close." according to Merrill Gee. This novel is every bit as exciting and interesting historically as Scaramouche. What it lacks is the entwicklung of the hero that makes Scaramouche such a wonderful book. Still it is definitely a wonderful read and I would rate it right behind Scaramouche, The Sea Hawk, and Bellarion, which is high praise because Sabatini has so many really good books..
