"Worth the price" according to Tex Jr.. I'm always a bit leery when a new book on Wyatt Earp comes out, that it will be just another bash fest. From Frank Waters & other 20th century writers, to the recent Bill O' Reilly 'Lies & legends', the obsession with knocking Earp off the pedestal that some had put him on is just plain boring. I found this book to be refreshing in it's balanced look at the Earp story. I didn't think I could learn anymore at this point after reading everything available but the way this book is put together makes you realize a few things like the fact that the Earp's were much more then just gun fighters & lawmen at Tom. Truly a game-changer Ace Kirk This is the book that will completely change the way you view the old west and the importance of Wyatt Earp. I've read many books about him and his family's story, but this was the first truly transformational perspective I've read. More research is necessary to fully understand what happened, but this new evidence certainly has the ring of truth to it. I highly recommend this well-researched work.. Buy for contents, not title I have given three stars only because while the he book fails to live up to its (marketing) title, it has fqscinating content not usually found in Eqarp books. The subtitle of this book, “the Bloody Restoration of Law and Order Along the Mexican Border,, 1882,” over sells and misstates the contents of this book (no doubt, for marketing purposes). As a result, it may be disappointing to many purchasers. It does not extensively deal with “the war on the cowboys.” But looking beyond the title to its actual contents, it is an interesting and valuable bookThe author does not deal with
What can be learned from another retelling of the Tombstone saga? Recent revelations challenge the traditional view of Wyatt Earp's campaign against the Cow-boy confederation as a bloody personal feud a la western fiction. It was a seek and destroy mission sanctioned by the United States attorney general, the U.S. The author examines the details of the letter, including the shotgun dual between Earp and Curly Bill, the split between Earp and Doc Holliday, sanctuary for the Earp posse in Colorado and Holliday's extradition fight, Earp's covert assault resulting in Johnny Ringo's death, and the controversial courtship and marriage of Earp and Josephine Marcus.. marshal and the Arizona Territory governor, following a year of corrupt law enforcement in league with the Cow-boys' livestock raids, stagecoach holdups and other atrocities. Presented in three sections, this book establishes the major players involved in the convergence on Tombstone, provides an account of Earp's activities during the 18 months prior to the final action and discusses the provenance and credibility of the "Otero Letter."
