I was pleasantly surprised to find that while Samuel Grafton-Hall is a central character in the story, the novel really centers upon the men and women who are drawn into his orbit. I found these characters immensely fascinating and dynamic, particularly Grafton-Hall’s love interests, Elizabeth, Daphne, and Catherine. The attention paid to architectural detail also impressed me. This clear knowledge of artistry and design really helps make the book&rsquo. He is an enfant terrible who is always keeping his lawyer busy and wants to always be in control. The book is told in flashback as a manuscript that said lawyer is writing. There are only a few characters so the story is not hard to follow. I was not surprised by the ending but it was good as Grafton-Hall still tries to control others from the grave.
