. From Library Journal Eighteen stories from nine African countries, with famous pieces such as Achebe's Civil Peace and Ngugi's The Return as well as several fine works by less-known writers, make up this anthology. While students will welcome this material and the general introduction, the volume is not, as is claimed, designed ``for reading pleasure.'' Chinua Achebe and C.L. Innes's recent paperback anthology African Short Stories ( LJ 2/15/85) is a better selection, without the commentary but at one fifth the price. Only one woman, however, Ama Ata Aidoo, is represented; other women authors such as Flora Nwapa and Grace Ogot should surely have been included. Each story is accompanied by visually distracting line numbers, and followed by a lengthy commentary: notes on the author, plot summary, and notes and questions on the text.
