It must nearly always be a thrill to see “the man behind the curtain” when reading diaries, and maybe especially in this case, given how carefully crafted Susan Sontag’s public writing and persona were. Before reading these volumes I was afraid they would confirm the impression given me from reading "Sempre Susan," by Sigrid Nunez, that Sontag lacked insight into herself and was psychologically kind of shallow.
