I could smell the magnolias and the kudzu and feel the itchy, sweaty heat of Alabama permeate all the stories wrapped up in this novel, but what really sticks with me after reading it are all the women of the book. Arlene's mother who couldn't go on after her husband died (and probably wasn't that well put together in the first place, but she blended in to her Southern family). Her. L.K.B.H. said there ARE gods in alabama!!!!. this is a phenomenal first novel!! the characters are incredibly well-fleshed-out and their voices jump off the pages. jackson's writing is clever, fast paced and snappy. the story goes back and forth between today and the protagonist's days 10 years earlier in high school in her schlumpy, small southern hometown.lena, a graduate student in chicago in an interracial relationship, c. JB said Fun read. Love her writing! Have devoured all her books since finding her new one in our library. She is very funny, great use of language, southern ladies first person in some kind of trouble. Pure enjoyment!
