DESCRIPTION:

The Great Western Railway story also demonstrates the paradox of strategy gary talbot Its my hobby reading being a train spotter from way back. The Great Western Railway story also demonstrates the paradox of strategy decision making. How does a city (Bristol) that relies on sea trade compete with a new emerging sea port (Liverpool) with easier access to markets? It builds a railway across the country side to London. Why 3 stars. A book like this needs lots of photographs, plans and diagrams from the era when steam and rail travel were king.. Great Western Railway tramwayjohn I enjoyed reading this book although as I live in Australia, I am perhaps not able to depreciate the subject as much as a person living in the region covered by the GWR. The story of the broad gauge, and the struggle to build the railway in the first place, and the "no expense spared" approach and bold engineering is amazing. Those bridges and tunnels built so long ago, still serve today!

The Great Western Railway company is remembered with nostalgia, 175 years after its foundation Covering the most beloved of Britain’s prenationization railway companies, this history details how the Great Western Railway built and ran the great main line from London to the West Country and Cornwalltoday’s First Great Western franchiseand how it was engineered by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who built such wonders as the Box Tunnel and the Saltash bridge. Wonderful stationssuch as the soaring Paddington and Bristol Temple Meadsas well as innumerable idyllic country halts with little more than a pagoda shelter and a couple of milk churns awaiting collection are also explored.. The designers of its steam locomotives are also discussed, from Churchward to Hawkesworth

(Apr.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. The book jacket features a beautiful wraparound painting by Guy Allen, evocative of the vintage GWR promotional posters by Frank Newbould. He brings along a fine pack of photos, arriving at the final destination with coverage of the heritage railways preservation movement and museums. All rights reserved. The only disappointments are a lack of maps and, curiously, no mention of Frank Newbould. . He profiles such key figures as innovative engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel and documents the changes wrought on the landscape, employment, agriculture, towns, and seaside resorts. According to the author, more books have been written about GWR than other railways, but it's doubtful any could be as in-depth as this one, so comprehensive that it will easily satisfy those rail buffs who demand details.
