DESCRIPTION:

"Useful and informative, despite some minor flaws" according to Nicholas Shaneyfelt. As a collaborative pianist and coach, I have found this to be an extremely useful resource, from the point of view of somebody who needs a quick desk reference of arias, tersely summarized plots, and scattered advice and translations. The book is organized by voice: soprano, mezzo, tenor, bass/baritone, with appendices that index the arias by opera, by language, and by period.I agree with the previous . I agree with the other reviewer- book not very helpful A Customer I was very disappointed with this book, one of the reasons being what another reviewer pointed out, which is that there is absolutely NO discussion of the fach system in the book, which may render the book useless to some. I also noticed a mistake when doing research in the book- the aria summary for "Signore, Ascolta" and "Tu che di gel sei cinta" are reversed (in other words, the "Signore, ascolta" d. not worth it Bradley I was completely dissappointed with this book. Very limited information. Supposedly there is "an extensive discussion of fach" which is false. There is no discussion whatsoever. Waste of money in my opinion. Aria database online is more useful.

CHOICE December 2007" C. This work can be compared to Berton Coffin's Singer's Repertoire (2nd ed., 1962), which covers the art song in much the same manner. Clark discusses each briefly, touching on the dramatic setting and context, with interpretative suggestions for the performer. The arias are grouped by voice type (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass), with further subdivisions by character (spinto, dramatic, etc.). Separate indexes for locating arias by title, opera, language, and historical period aid readers in locating works that fit certain repertory requirements. Each entry gives the title of the aria and its location within the work, along with the vocal range and duration. Kolczynski, Boston Public Library. "Clark has compiled a guide to opera repertory for solo voice. This work can be compared to Berton Coffin's 'Singer's Repertoire' (2nd ed., 1962), which covers the art song in much the same manner. Recommended."
