DESCRIPTION:
A pretty good book on a deep subject Alexander Shuger I got this because I was thinking along the same lines - in how we could create models for natural languages. It's just OK. It was the author's doctorate dissertation, and I've always wondered what might be next. Evidently, nothing has followed. It is a good read, and fairy well written as far as dissertations go. The topic might today be out of date, but it has always intrigued me. If you're interested in Montague Semantics, Kripke Semantics, or, in general, the logical framing of possible worlds, then you should read this book.. JohnD said Perfect delivery, good price. Presumably they had made an error, because this book is rare, out of print book, and it was ridiculously cheap at this reseller. So I expected them to cancel the order or come up with a cheap excuse, but much to my surprise I swiftly received the book undamaged and in top quality. Great!
Richard Montague formulated the revolutionary insight that we can understand the concept of meaning in ordinary languages much in the same way as we understand the semantics of logical languages. The present work does away with unnecessary complexities, obtains a streamlined version of the theory, shows how partialising the theory automatically provides us with the most central concepts of Situation Semantics, and offers a simple logical treatment of propositional attitude verbs, perception verbs and proper names.. Muskens radically simplifies Montague Semantics and generalises the theory by basing it on a partial higher order logic resulting in a theory which combines important aspects of Montague Semantics and Situation Semantics. Unfortunately, he formalised his idea in an unnecessarily complex way
