Compelling Read Francophile I've read all three volumes in this series and each one seemed even better than the previous one. I was very caught up in the second volume but was even more fascinated with the third. Louise Herman's meticulous knowledge of British history placed each story in the context of an historical period going back to 1300. The stories were beautifully written, many of them quite poignant. I started with Book One and found it confusing. I went to Book Three and read it backwards; the last chapter and then going to the previous chapters. Book Two was read the same way and then I reread Book One backwards. I was finally able to understand and love the series. The books were unconventionally organized, but I enjoyed them; after I read them from ending to beginning!
