A Rewarding Read But Not an Easy One This dark steampunk novel is beautifully written with well-developed characters and an intriguing plot. It would not be to everyone’s taste because its portrayal of the city of New Crobuzon, in which the novel is set, spares nothing in detailing the grime, corrosion, and corruption of the city. The setting is an essential character, shaping and imprisoning its inhabitants. And at the heart of New Crobuzon sits Perdido Street Station, seat of the city government, like a giant spider casting it. Spectacular. One of my new favorites. T. Davis I finished PSS at ~2am, and I was up until ~5am, partially due to usual insomnia, partially due to how absolutely blown away I was. This book, I think, will go down as one of my top 5 books of all time. I'd been meaning to read it for years, but was always terrified by Mieville's reputation for dense, verbose prose.
