While highlighting the on-going dynamic of a presidential experiencetruly, it's not the position; it is the transitionthe authors provide prescient guidance. In Sanaghan, Goldstein, and Gaval's new book, Presidential Transitions, three experienced practitioners in the field of higher education provide us with a carefully crafted, superbly grounded, and eminently practical strategic guide to presidential success in today's challenging environment. They offer a comprehensive, thoughtfully analytical, and wonderfully engaging 'handbook for success' for those involved in, supportive of, or somehow aligned with the work of the contemporary college and university presidency. Presidential Transitions is an excellent and important book, and a must-read for presidents, aspiring presidents, board members, senior institutional l
Dozens of presidents, chancellors, board members, and other senior executives were interviewed for this book. A presidential transition has a major impact on the life of an institution. Each major chapter includes selected personal observations, from these interviews, which illustrate the critical issues addressed in the book.. This book is designed to provide assistance to presidents, trustees, faculty, and other important stakeholder groups and help them avoid the pitfalls of poorly managed transitions. Readers will discover that appropriately addressing the anxiety that accompanies major transitions_for both those joining the institution and those already present_is essential. The authors discuss how, with proper planning, care, and execution, this presidential passage can be an opportunity for a transitioning president, and those who surround him or her, to write a positive chapter in the campus history. Hundreds of presidential transitions take place annually, and when they are not amicable and carefully orchestrated, they can scar both the institution and the president. Sanaghan, Goldstein, and Gaval estimate that more than one-third of the presidential transitions in higher education are involuntary and have a negative effect on the institution
Gaval is vice president for planning, Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Sanaghan is president of The Sanaghan Group, an organizational consulting firm specializing in leadership development, collaborative strategic planning, executive coaching and leadership transitions. . He
"I found the information to be useful to me as a professional" according to PluralTurtle. After reading, reflecting on, and writing about this book, I found the information to be useful to me as a professional, despite not being a president. The authors spend the most time on advice to new presidents. In this way I would consider this book to be the “missing manual” a new president could rely on to help them as they transition into their new position. In keeping with the academic theme, I could see an institution assigning this book to their new president.Of course this book does not address all of the issues of the . "The real deal" according to James H. Lytle. This is an extremely useful book for those going through leadership transitions, whether as candidates, new appointees, or as trustees. Each chapter deals with a part of the transition process, using the authors' experiences, buttressed by theory, then adds accounts from presidents who decribe their own transition experiences (ranging from Harvard to community college). Although the book deals with higher education, it would be equally useful for those in corporate, K-12, or non-profit organizations.James H. Lytle, Practice Professor, Unive. A Must Read for Presidents and Boards This book is most informative about what occurs when institutions go through presidential transitions. It provides very valuable and useful information for Boards, outgoing presidents and incoming presidents. This is a very difficult and stressful time for an institution. There are right ways and wrong ways to do this. The experience of others can be extremely helpful. This should be a must read for all key individuals involved in a presidential transition.
