"Fabulous Book About A Fabulous Man!" according to Alphia D. Larkins. This is a wonderful book, very interesting and entertaining to read! I loved it and my only regret is that I wish it had gone into more details about the family's private lives. I would especially like to know more about the woman that Ernie married so soon after Betty's death from an overdose of pills. Buck does not give much information or background at all on her, only to say tha. "Beautiful Tribute for his Family" according to Julie A. Ball. Buck Ford has done an absolutely beautiful job in telling his family history here in River of No Return. What a loving tribute to his parents and while they may not be proud of themselves in this book, they would certainly be proud of their son(s). Buck could have easily made this story into a "poor little me" book but instead he showed the power of the human spirit as he rose above. A Wild Ride Reading Jeffrey Buckner Ford's biography of his Father and Mother is an eye opener, to say the least! Anyone who thinks the deep voiced crooner of such hits as 'Sixteen Tons' 'River of No Return' 'Shotgun Boogie' etc. had a charmed life is in for a big shock! What starts out as a great love story, soon turns to tragedy, as the lovely Betty Ford turns to drink as a means of 'coping' w

It was a time when the name Ernie Ford was in the air and his fame worldwide.. For Betty it was vodka, valium, and tranquilizers. 'River of No Return: Tennessee Ernie Ford and the Woman He Loved' is the recounting of their life together, of Ernie's spectacular success as an entertainer, of their growing spiral of self-destruction as his career flourished, and of their two sons' despair as they watched the light slowly fade from their parents' eyes and the joy vanish from their lives. For Ernie, it was beer for breakfast, Cutty for lunch at the club, and whatever later in the day. In 'River of No Return' their son Jeffery remembers when his family's joy of being together was infectious, when the promise of every day and the thrill of being at the center of the spotlight was rapturous. In 1942 Ernest Jennings Ford married nineteen-year-old Betty Jean Heminger, whom he had met at Victorville Army Air Base in California

The younger Ford gives readers an in-depth look behind the curtain, painting a multilayered portrait of the man who hid his pain behind a salt-of-the-earth Everyman pose. . Though Ernie recorded hundreds of songs, Ford keeps his dad's career manageable with broad strokes, delving into minutiae only when the topic turns to mega-hit "Sixteen Tons" and the beginning of his gospel period. The heart of the book is Ford's doomed relationship with his first wife Betty, who would, after more than 40 years of marriage, take her own life. Though storm clouds continually threaten, the Fords' life wasn't all dark; Ford includes colorful anecdotes featuring celebrities like Jerry Lewis and Bob Hope, their neighbor, as well as happy family memories like Disneyland on opening day.
