An international bestseller, Sailing Alone Around the World was a critical success upon its publication in 1900. Despite a lifetime at sea, Slocum never learned to swim. At the time, it was believed his boat had been run down by a steamer or struck by a whale, however it was later determined that the Spray could also have easily capsized. Slocum enjoyed widespread fame in the English-speaking world, including an invitation to speak at a dinner in honor of Mark Twain, until his

I wish the type wasn't so small; this is I wish the type wasn't so small; this is going to kill my stepfather's eyes. Some people complained about the text being small in the other edition, but it seems that Amazon shares reviews for a book across all editions, so it was hard to tell which book had bigger type. I was born in a cold spot, on coldest North Mountain, on a cold February 20, though I am a citizen of the United States—a naturalized Yankee, if it may be said that Nova Scotians are not Yankees in the truest sense of the word. As for myself, the wonderful sea charmed me from the first. My father was the sort of man who, if wrecked on a desolate island, would find his way home, if he had a jack-knife and could find a tree. He was a
