This book takes an interesting turn as it doesn't really have anything to do with the events and characters from the first book. They're mentioned, but a reader would do fine jumping on board with this second book without missing a beat. I like this in a world building standpoint. It gives the universe a bigger feel. It helps tha. Charles said More Fi than Sci. With baffling plot points and slightly disjointed writing this book reads like an action movie. Unfortunately, I can't say that's a good thing. It's solidly mediocre, with an occasional interesting twist, but it's mostly overshadowed by the fact that I had to frequently re-read sections to even understand the action. And while the author conveys the investigation and how the characters struggle to wrap their heads around a baffling plot, once it's all revealed, it's still f. "light actioner" according to Henry L. Lazarus. Humanity is at war with a machine intelligence. Their main weapon are the psi-marines who can mentally disrupt the connection between the spiders and their fighting drones.
