DESCRIPTION:
"In this witty, wise picture book, Boelts presents a kid’s-eye view of aconsumer fad that rages through school at gale force." — Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books (starred review)All Jeremy wants is a pair of those shoes, the ones everyone at school seems to be wearing. But sore feet aren’t much fun, and Jeremy soon sees that the things he has — warm boots, a loving grandma, and the chance to help a friend — are worth more than the things he wants.. Though Jeremy’s grandma says they don’t have room for "want," just "need," when his old shoes fall apart at school, he is more determined than ever to have those shoes, even a thrift-shop pair that are much too small

It could be better. It's a great story, but it's lacking. It's wonderful to use when talking about empathy, and the diversity of skin colors is great. The concept of needing snow boots for winter and having to change to go out to recess is lost on kids who don't live in places where there is a lot of snow. Taking a bus from place to place is also lost on kids who live in rural areas, because we don't have public transportation. Those things are easily scaffolded, though. My biggest complaint is that the author didn't flesh out Jeremy giving Antonio the shoes . "Great lesson of finding satisfaction through sharing for kids." according to Kindle Customer. This is a great book. My boys ask to have it read to them at least once a week. The pictures are nice and bright and colorful. I like that it shoes them that fads are fleeting and illogical. This kid received just what he needed - the boots - and over the course of the story, those proved to make him happy. His sharing the shoes that didn't fit with his friend who needed them, also made both him and his friend happy.. "Buy this book" according to A parent.
