DESCRIPTION:

His narrative style and anti-heroic characters have influenced many writers, including Ernest Hemingway, D.H. Some of his works have a strain of romanticism, but more importantly he is recognized as an important forerunner of modernist literature. Joseph Conrad, born Jozef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski, (1857-1924) was a Polish-born novelist who spent most of his adult life in Britain. Writing during the apogee of the British Empire, Conrad drew upon his experiences in the British Merchant Navy to create novels and short stories that reflected aspects of a world-wide empire while also plumbing the depths of the human soul. He is regarded as one of the greatest English novelists, which is even more notable because he did not learn to speak English well until he was in his 20s. Amongst his best known works are Heart of Darkness (1899), Lord Jim (1900), Under Western Eyes (1911), Victory (1915) and The Rescue (1920).. He is recognized as a master prose stylist. Lawrence and Graham Greene

He is the Captain." -David Poyer, author of The Med.. "Conrad is quite simply the master of all who try to reflect the world of the sea in the mirror of the written word.No one has limned more vividly the courage, the skill, the dreams, and terrors of those who set out upon the waters

Better than a perfect storm This novel is unforgettable. Conrad creates a sense of terror regarding the forces of nature that will stand up to any special effects that Hollywood can produce. The scene describing the panic below deck of the Chinese workers is one of the most powerful in literature. Not to be missed.. "A very nice piece of writing." according to The Old Prospector. This is a gem of a sea story by a master. It may start a little slow, but Joseph Conrad is just laying groundwork. Before long the reader is experencing very good writing about a very bad voyage. This would make a great man against nature movie.
