DESCRIPTION:
Rod and Custom Magazine, December 2005, reviewed by Tim Bernsau "The recently published Von Dutch: The Art, The Myth, The Legend comes closer than anything written to uncovering the truth about hot rodding's prominent pinstriper and most controversial character.
Where it can, this book sets the record straight on Von Dutch the man, but in many cases conflicting stories will serve to illustrate the contrary, colorful, and sometimes difficult nature of Von Dutch the legend. Besides being a striper, he was a gifted artist, machinist, and gun- and knifesmith. This book is a must-have for fans of hot rodding and hot rod culture!. Using stories and quotes culled from interviews, vintage photos, and images of the art and other works he left behind, this book chronicles Kenneth Howard's life from pinstriping beatnik to bus-dwelling hermit. Considered the founder of "modern" pinstriping, he was a prominent character in many of the rodding magazines of the late '50s, and his fame endured long after he apparently tired of it. Von Dutch is one of the most interesting characters in hot rod and popular culture history
Well done history on a true artisan John O. Morton Pat Ganahl has taken a very difficult subject, by the name of "Von Dutch" aka Kenneth Howard into a collage of history, photos and stories. There are many people who claim to have "known Von Dutch" [1929-1992]. Most just "used" him and his "reputation."The most important photo of the . Von Dutch A very well written book by respected automotive writer Pat Ganahl. It is the life and work of the interesting and slightly crazy early auto paint striper Von Dutch. Includes some great photographs. If you are interested in old school automotive customizing I would recomend this book.. Von Dutch The pictures of the book are awesome. Von Dutch is truly talented and this book tells you the history behind the artwork. If you are a car lover and an artist it is the perfect book for you. Reading the history and motivation behind such designs is great.
