Poulin While the copyright of this collection is 1971, which is almost 40 years ago, many of the stories within contain references and subject matter to much earlier times. Many of the stories contain "olde english" and talk of times as early back as 1500 or 1600. Mostly the stories do contain a common element in that they are for the most part actually scary. Having read many horror anthologies that put me right to sleep at night, this one will give you a few scares, a pleasant surprise seeing I got the book on the cheap.. 0 years ago, many of the stories within contain references and subject matter to much earlier times. My second book is almost finished. It is a ghost story called "The Diary of Audrey Malone Frayer." I can safely say that somewhere in the deep recesses of my dark mind, there are things from "50 Great Horror Stories" that might show from time to time in my own stories. Frankly, I had doubts about this book at first but after reading it I must say: FANTASTIC! I absolutely love the stories contained in this book. Most are from a European standpoint, but there are a few from America and (if I recall correctly) one from China. Alot of the stories will fall into the category of "ghost stories", but many others are about werewolves, vampires, and straight up strange tales of murder; this book pretty much covers everything. If you are a lover of true horror, you will not regret buying this book. As a matter of fact, I have a top shelf for all my favorite books and this one will be put there
