"There was very little about the mauling and the aftermath" according to Amazon Customer. There was very little about the mauling and the aftermath. The title was misleading. Author jumped from topic to topic and jumped around with the info. he was talking about. At times each paragraph had nothing to do with the previous paragraph or the one after it. At times what he was talking about dragged on. He went too long with history and opinion wh. ""He used to be a rather handsome fellow" according to catspa. before that sow bear peeled half his face off."Mr. Rogan has written a compelling account which paints a vivid mental picture in my mind. The story of his narrow escape is fascinating, and his road to physical and mental recovery as well. As he relives the adventure with the reader by his side, we don't have to endure the expense and ugly scars from a be. Wonderful book I found this book so gripping that I read it in one sitting. The mauling is only a small part of the story. Most of the book is about the beauty of Kodiak, life there (especially hunting, hiking and fishing), and about the fascinating characteristics of bears. I also enjoyed reading about the author's wolf that goes on his hunting trips! I am recommendin

This new edition includes a bonus photo section by the talented Alaskan photographer, Adina Preston. I discuss other maulings around Alaska, drawn directly from survivors or witnesses of the event. We live and compete with the bear across most of North America. You can see her work at:  adinaprestonphotographyugmug/. How is that working out for both sides?  How dangerous are they, really?  How do we minimize conflict with this large predator for the safety of both species? The book has been very popular as a Kindle offering and is now available in this paperback edition. Have you wondered what it would really be like to survive an encount

He unabashedly asserts "one of my greatest joys" is watching and photographing bears and other wildlife. Hunt or hike with a partner. Rogan puts it better than anyone else: "Life is too short to hold grudges."  Rick Sinnott, retired Alaska F&G biologist.. Other advice in the book is equally useful. To his undying credit, Rogan still admires bears. Carry a gun big enough to collapse an adrenaline-fueled brown bear, even when you're hunting a 100-pound deer. From Alaska Dispatch.Rogan appears to be an average Joe, which accounts for much of the charm of his book
