DESCRIPTION:

In this picture book, graceful illustrations connect the text to everyday life, showing how the statements apply to school, family, and friendships. The pairing of Saint John XXIII's cherished words and Bimba Landmann's symbolic artwork instills readers of all ages with a sense of peace while they savor each page. Known fondly as "The Good Pope," John XXIII was recently canonized as a saint, and his daily Decalogue continues to be a source of inspiration for people the world over. This lovely book provides the perfect reminder of how to make the most of every day.

These 10 commandments offer suggestions for living a peaceful and purposeful life: dress simply, be polite and kind to others, refrain from criticism, be happy and know that God loves you, do a good deed without bragging, and perform an unpleasant task without complaining. VERDICT A potential read-aloud option for younger children in schools and libraries serving a religion-based curriculum.—Eva Elisabeth VonAncken, formerly at Trinity-Pawling School, Pawling, NY . Oddly, although the original states that reading for 10 minutes a day is as necessary to the soul as food is for the body, this version instead encourages communing with God. In this book, he talks about what he will and will not do today. It focuses on self-improvement, not the improvement of others. There is also talk of taking it one day at a time and resting in God knowing that He loves you. It is a simple book with a simple message, but the message is powerful. In fact, it is a book I feel children and adults shoul. Wonderful prayer for young people Jonathan F. Sullivan Based on the daily prayer of Pope St. John XXIII, "Just for Today" is a lavishly illustrated prayer book for young people. The text of the prayer -- a sort of "decalogue for daily living" -- includes simple reminders for how to go about living as a Christian in the world, including "I will not look to improve of discipline anyone other than myself," "I will adapt to circumstances, without expecting circumstances to adapt to my wishes," and "I will do a good deed and tell no one about it."While grounded in Christian worldview and ethic, even nonbelievers will find something of value to "the good pop. Hate the illustrations The text of this book is excellent - very inspiring for all ages. However, I hate the illustrations! I bought this book as a First Communion present for my nephew. I am not going to give it to him because the pictures are so unusual that they are distracting from the text. On several pages, the main character's angular head is sideways and looks like it was drawn first, cut out with scissors and pasted back on sideways. It caught my eye right away and ruined the book for me. I believe that most children (the target audience) will also dislike the illustrations. I am a college-educated lady with a M
