DESCRIPTION:
From the Back Cover The Sun King, Louis XIV is dying, and the French court is erupting in a frenzy of twisted alliances and dark schemes in the struggle for power. . As if we are eavesdropping in the chambers and hallways of Versailles, eyewitness Saint-Simon details the plots and counter plots, his own involvement, and his close relationships with some of most fascinating and vividly sketched characters in history
Saint Simon kept a journal during the 30 plus years he was a peer at the French court. Many of Saint-Simon's letters are possibly still being held.. He spent his retirement writing his memoirs, a first-hand account of the train-wreck that eventually lead to the French Revolution. When he died, his memoirs were confiscated by order of the King. The French government did not release them until 1830
"Must-read for a French history buff" according to Jay T.. Bought this and its companion book for my husband, who's fascinated by French history. Saint-Simon was one of the great diarists and through these books you really get a picture of the minute details of court life. Like Pepys, he takes you into the time and place in a way that a simple history from a modern perspective can't begin to. This is a seminal source and really worth the time if the subject interests you. There's nothing quite like walking in someone else's shoes.
