"The real Chicago" according to Mick. These writings hit the soul, really hard. Being from Chicago, Nate Marshall really moved me. Every line brought in a lot of emotions.. I was genuinely glad I came across Nate Marshall I read this book in grad school and was blown away. As a writer of color, I was genuinely glad I came across Nate Marshall. How is he not on our radars? My reading experience was like sitting in the back seat of a Cadillac while driving around the streets of Southside Chicago with a friend who has a story to tell at each stoplight. It's dark, uplifting, humorous, youthful, brutal, broken, proud, large, and microscopic. You see the hood in a way that only the poet can render. If you've read this far, you must be interested, so PICK THIS UP. You wil. J. Scott Brownlee said Marshall's is my favorite. It sings. There have been a number of outstanding poetry collections published this year. Marshall's is my favorite. It sings, it pivots, it pushes us to confront the realistic aspects of life in Chicago for young Black men and women and does so with an attention to form, syntax, and sound that operate at the wunderkind level. This is a poet who will define our generation, and looking back in the future it will be hard to remember this collection was / is only his first.

"In his powerful debut collection, winner of the 2014 Agnes Lynch Starrett Poetry Prize, Marshall explores the perils and praise songs of black lives on the South Side of Chicago. Marshall’s poetry offers an insider’s perspective that asks the reader to parse the sociopolitical systems that imperil black lives—not through abstract ideology, but through authentically rendered eyes: “every kid that’s killed is one less free lunch,/ a fiscal coup. Some poems struggle to do more than simply present raw emotion and experience, but these are small bumps in an otherwise impressive debut. welcome to where we from.”—Publishers Weekly. Much of the collection takes shape through the voice of a young black man navigating high school, family, friendships, and the physical and mental dangers that surround him
