DESCRIPTION:

The fictional bioterror of Richard Preston's The Cobra Event was scary enough, but The First Horseman is based on the real Spanish flu, a hideous virus that killed over 20 million people in 1918. From there the novel traces scientists Anne Adair and Benton Kicklighter on their expedition to the frozen town of Kopervik to uncover the miners' corpses. Not knowing that the CIA is behind Adair and Kicklighter's work, Washington Post reporter Frank Daly follows their story. The CIA investigates the events at Tasi-ko, and realizing that the disease could well be a hybrid Spanish flu being tested as a biological weapon, recruits a team of American scientists to uncover the only known sample of the 1918 pandemic--which is frozen into the bodies of miners buried in the Arctic. While Case doesn't spend much time delving into the lives and motivations of his characters, the Spanish flu is the real star. In New York, a man and a

Until at last he comes face-to-face with a shocking secret, a secret that pitches him into a harrowing race to prevent nothing less than apocalypse.. On the Norwegian sea, an icebreaker forges its way through frozen waters to a remote island in the Arctic, carrying a scientific team that hopes to unearth the bodies of long-dead miners. When he meets up with the ship upon its return to port in Norway, it is clear that something has gone terribly wrong.Fear haunts the faces of the crew. But the more he uncovers, the more dangerous the stakes become. And someone wants Daly to stop asking questions. No one will talk. Washington Post reporter Frank Daly has the story of a lifetime

My review of "the genesis code" sparked debate in my small hometown and I eageraly awaited case's next tale. This book should scare the beejeezus out of all of us. Case's story of biological warfare was much more plausible than, say, "The Cobra Event," which I enjoyed, but it didn't really make me sit up and take notice because it's demented villan operated alone. The bad guy in "the first horseman" has an army of devoted followers and a seemingly endless treasury that will allow him to set "The Spanish Lady" (a particulary virulent strain of influenza) out into the world.I'm glad to be livi. Be afraid.be very afraid Terry Mathews I loved 'the genesis code,' and looked forward to this new offering from the mysterious john case.I guess what struck me about this book is that its premise is so possible. It frightens me to think what is going to happen to this planet when fanatics like case's villanand the like perfect biological warfare. There will be no safe placenot even the woods of east Texas!case has done a good job telling a story with tragic consequences for all of us.I look forward to more case! I just wish he had a kinder, gentler planet to write about.. "Scary as Hell" according to Amazon Customer. Better than Genesis Code, which was excellent. This book is scary as hell in that it could happen. Now I believe that over population is our worst pollution problem, but again the scenar- io set out in this book is scary as hell. The scene with the baby in the plastic bag was really shocking to say the least and of course, we have another fabulous ending as we did in Genesis Code. I'm going to look up that State of Emergency Act, that, too, is scary as Hell.
