DESCRIPTION:

Great lectures. It was a perfect course for me. Lots of history, great contemporary sense of humor, flawless presentation. I purchased Soshtakovitch set as well (2 DVDs). Equally superb. These need some sort of a multiple choice exam at the end to test what material one has been able to absorb. One can always go back to this exam to remember what one has learned. It is hard to watch the whole thing twice!. "Parts were very engrossing; parts too flowery" according to zzz. Most off this book was fascinating and educational. Some parts were exactly what I was looking to learn about. A few parts, for me, were drawn out and so a little hard to get through -- possibly because this was written so long ago when this kind of writing was offered in a different style. You will find herein: history of musical instruments, explanation about instrumental groups and how they came about, music theory, discussions of orc. "obscure" according to whitepine. I am a classical musician, and I found this one to be difficult going. Perhaps if I had been able to stick it out, I would have found some helpful nuggets.
