DESCRIPTION:

Practical and Informative Ron Kenett This second edition is an excellent starting point for anyone dealing with time series forecasting. The book is very well motivated by real life case studies, the approach is practical and the coverage is comprehensive. Generous references to software programs make the content accessible to undergrads in forecasting classes, MBA students and practitioners in business, industry and services who need to study time series to help decision making processes. The style is clear, the examples educational and the guidance very professional in addressing a wide scope of issues. I particularly appreciate the fact that the author found a way to balance a. ubpdqn said Principles and a guide rather than hands-on. This book was a disappointment. I accept that the author is professional and passionate in the area of forecasting. However, the book was largely a set of principles and planning, performance and reporting of forecasting and a series of problems to motivate self-learning. The problems, though stepwise described, are not worked examples with interpretations or idenitification of pitfalls or limitations. Hence, it fails to achieve pragmatism or "hands-on" experiences suggested in the title. There are a number of useful data sources and list of references. In contrast, the rather poor quality video [] of a lecture given by Professor Hyndman is an . "It's About Time" according to John M. Ford. Galit Shmueli's text on time series forecasting is a practitioner-oriented introduction. She has made the text brief, readable, and focused on commonly-used methods. The book draws on well-explained examples throughout, including those integrated into chapters, those that appear in end-of-chapter problems, and those that fill a final chapter of case studies. Shmueli's book can be used with a six or seven week college class, as the text for a four-week, online statistics dot com course, or for self-study.It assumes access to XLMiner, an Excel add-on that supports data mining analysis methods, including a set of time series procedures.
