This book is about avoiding or overcoming unhealthy dependency in the Christian movement. The reader will be introduced to churches that were once victims of unhealthy dependency but learned how to overcome it. Several chapters are a basic introduction to cross-cultural issues for missionaries and church leaders. It contains a description of the dependency syndrome, its historical development and how to overcome it. The author welcomes interaction with those who want to seriously deal with the mentality of dependency in the Christian movement.. Though unhealthy dependency is widespread, the basic premise of this book is that it does not need to be considered an incurable illness. When Charity Destroys Dignity Katheryn A Craig "When Charity Destroys Dignity: Overcoming Unhealthy Dependency in the Christian Movement" by Glenn J. Schwartz is a book with a lot of food for thought. It reads like a textbook which is understandable since it is a compilation of talks and shorter articles given over several years which have been gathered together. But it is readable. Mr. Schwartz uses his extensive experience and contacts with the African church to. Luke B. Townsley said An impressive piece of work. I read it with the intensity of an action thriller. (really) The thing is it lays out the problem very well (100 years of African missions, and we don't seem to have solved anything), but it doesn't really offer much by way of solutions. Still though, understanding the problem is half the battle. And yes, most people will find it boring. It isn't a casual read (See Steve Saint's book, The Great Omission: Fulfilling Ch. "Must read for anyone in Christian Missions" according to John A. I am a missionary serving in an emerging world country in a very remote location. Glenn Schwartz does a great job presenting authoritative and experiential material regarding the "Western" approach to missions. I can vouch for what he says and our own mission has adopted Glenn's principles with success. Of special interest to me was the chapter on "Short Term Missions."
