Modeled writing is key to transforming any type of writing instruction Boswell makes a strong case for modeling writing versus assigning or explaining writing. She encourages teachers to model not only quality writing, but also what’s hard about writing and what we do to revise, revise, and revise our writing. Numerous examples of teachers thinking aloud create a vivid picture of what this can look like in the classroom. The modeled writing Boswell describes will transform your writing instruction and is applicable to ANY writing we do in the classroom – in science, in social studies, in math as well as in language arts.. An Absolute Must For Any Teacher Who Teaches Writing (K-8) SharonCLong This book is a wonderful read! I started implementing modeled writing before I finished the book and it shocked me at the immediate growth my Kindergarten student showed. The transformation for my students was exciting. I have always struggled at how to teach writing. I always thought that the students disliked writing because it took time and patience. While this is still true (it takes patience and time), I now know that my students disliked writing because they didn't really know how to do it. This book lays out strategies for any teacher to help his or her students learn how to write. I highly recom. Wonderful! Abbie T. Kelly does an amazing job of communicating the importance of modeling writing to our students, while at the same time, not overwhelming the reader. Her tips, strategies, and resources are all simple and easy to follow. In a small span of time (I think I plowed through this book in an hour!), Kelly manages to get you on board with the "why" and explains the "how" so beautifully that I walked away beyond inspired to do the best I can for my students. This may actually be the first year that I enjoy teaching writing! Thank you for all you do for teachers and our kids, Kelly!

WINNER OF THE 2016 LEARNING MAGAZINE TEACHERS' CHOICE AWARD! Modeling is one of the most effective of all teaching strategies and yet many teachers overlook this powerful tool in writing instruction

But we've lost sight a bit of how we can make the actual writing process visible to our students. Kelly, your message is clear: By becoming a constant and reflective writer in front of my students, I am able to not only raise the quality of their writing, but also their joy in picking up the pen and being writers for life. Over the years we've become more respectful of writing models, using powerful mentor texts, as examples of the craft we want our young writers to pursue. And best of all, Kelly delivers her wisdom in such an easy, conversational manner that it's like you're sharing a cup of tea alongside someone who just happens to know a whole lot about the teaching of writing, especially the fine art of modeling for aspiring writers. This book is a rare gem and one that I will constantly re
