I grabbed this for the Kindle since it was free, and like the previous reviewer, I only had a vague idea of the story from various cartoon versions.I was very pleasantly surprised. I've not read anything else by Washington Irving. The story is simple; the prose is easy to read but in spots is downright beautiful. Some of the scenic descriptions border on poetry. Irv. "A classic with some surprises" according to tammay. Of course, The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow is a classic ghost story and Washington Irving was a great writer for his time. The story delivers on atmosphere, not just with the ghost story but with the feeling of haunting that permeates the town of Tarry Town. This was the first time I had read the story since my childhood and it actually surprised me with the complexity . Amy Jenkins said Fun visuals for struggling readers. I use this graphic novel version to open our unit on horror. It is a favorite among my middle schoolers. They are struggling readers, yet can make the connections to Irving's original reverences to contemporary science of his time, and the American Revolution which impacted the culture of the village where he set the story. The paintings-naive, bright and straightforward in the tradition associated with Moses's illustrious forebear-suit the story stylistically although they do not fully enter into its spirit; they do not vary to plumb the moods of the story, which range from low country comedy to romance to suspense and terror. But the illustrations are well placed, either as two-page set pieces of the churchyard or Katrina's family farm (these are strikingly similar in composition to the work of Grandma Moses), or as small vignettes amidst the text.
